Leaving worship at Grange Hall (circa 1977)
|
Our Beginning
In September 1976, Southwest Christian Church and Countryside Christian Church sent 8 families to start the nucleus of what be known as Rolling Hills Christian Church. On September 12, 1977, the first worship service was held at the Grange Hall located at NW 46th St & Topeka BLVD. with 102 people in attendance. That evening, Orville Evans, a pastor who had started Southwest Christian Church in the 1950's spoke to a crowd of 250 to celebrate the start of Rolling Hills Christian Church. With the support of the CEA (Christian Evangelizing Association) and MEA (Men's Evangelizing Association which is longer functioning), Rolling Hills was able to hire their first pastor, Ron Shuman (who served from May 1977-January 1979). Without the guidance of these two organizations, starting Rolling Hills would have been much slower. |
Rolling Hills has always had a deep passion to share the love of Christ with kids. Because of that passion, in 1978, a bus ministry was started because of the rapid growth specifically with kids. The buses took kids to Shawnee North Parks & Rec for Sunday School. In 1979, to solve the space issues, land was purchased and a bond program was completed to start the groundbreaking of the new building under the leadership of Pastor Jim Kruse (who served from June 1979 - November 1983). In March of 1980, the first service in the new building was held. |
Over the next 40 years, Rolling Hills added onto their existing building for space for their kids department and expanded their offices under the leadership of Pastor Steve Seehorn. Steve served as the longest serving minister at Rolling Hills, serving 35 years in North Topeka. Rolling Hills experienced lots of growth and some decline over those 40 years, but yet remained faithful to North Topeka community.
